Smith Street Post Office to close next year

Wednesday 04 November 2020

The Post Office in Smith Street will close in the spring and be replaced by an "extended, refurbished and modernised" branch in the Co-op's Market Store.

Guernsey Post's lease on the Smith Street premises is due to expire in the spring and will not be renewed. Instead, postal services will be based out of the Co-op Store in the Market Buildings.

A new Post Office counter will also open at the Co-op’s Royal Terrace store on Glategny Esplanade, which will become a "postal hub" for business services.

"The Co-op have proven experience in running post offices located within their stores and we believe the partnership will only deliver benefit for our customers," said Boley Smillie, Chief Executive of Guernsey Post.

"Having made the decision to move away from Smith Street and to improve the existing Market Post Office which already offers easy access to our services, we believed it was also important to provide convenient access to our services for businesses based at the northern end of Town. The Co-op’s Royal Terrace store met all of our requirements.”

Iain Beresford, the Co-op's Chief Marketing & Membership Officer, said the Market Store's new post office will offer all the traditional counter services as well as a parcel collection counter and a self-service postal kiosk.

"We are looking forward to continuing to offer all of our members an enhanced offer through our store network, and look forward to welcoming existing customers of Smith Street to both of our locations where they will receive a warm welcome.”
