Skinny seal pup doubles his weight

The thinnest grey seal pup ever rescued by the GSPCA is continuing its recovery, and has doubled its weight.

Temperance was rescued last November after being spotted on the island's coastline, weighing just 11kgs. He now weighs 28.2kg.

Marine Mammal Carer Geoff George said he is is pleased to report "the huge gain in weight and improvements in health."

He said: "Temperance is eating plenty of fish and we are so thankful for all of the donations towards his care but he has some months to go. We are hopeful to put him in the outer pools very soon to get him fit for the wild which will be in the Spring.”

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, added: “It is wonderful to see Temperance the seal pup grow stronger each day.”

“Temperance is the 6th grey seal we have rescued in as many years here in Guernsey and we are all hopeful he carries on improving so we can get him in the outer pools and back to the wild in the next few months.

“Temperance eats dozens of fish every day and we continue to appeal for donations towards his care.”

The GSPCA is marking its 145th anniversary with its 'Purple Week'. The charity helps more than 2000 wild animals and birds every year.
