Police investigate potential "skeletal remains" in burnt car

Guernsey Police believe they may have found the remains of a skeleton in the driver's seat of a burnt out car.

The car was found on Monday in a secluded area near Petit Bot, after Police received reports of a vehicle having been set on fire. The car was already destroyed by the time the emergency service got there.

"During a subsequent detailed forensic examination of the car, specialist officers found what we believe at this stage to be parts of skeletal remains in the driver's seat. this is as yet, unconfirmed and further forensic tests are being carried out," a police spokesperson said.

"As a result of the significant damage caused by the fire, further examinations are needed to confirm relevant identity markings of the car, which would help establish registered ownership."

The police said while it was undertaking its forensic examination of the car it received a report of a missing 33-year-old man - it is now appealing for information of his whereabouts.

It was reported that Mikus Alps had been missing since the early hours of Monday 8 January, and was last seen at a residential address in St Saviours. Mr Alps, who is from Latvia, but a resident of Guernsey, is described as being around 5'9" tall with fair skin, blue eyes, short brown hair and a short beard. He is also said to have distinctive tattoos on his arms and back.

"Should forensic tests confirm the presence of human skeletal parts, we are at this stage keeping an open mind about the potential direction of the investigation," the police spokesperson said.
