Three arrests in one weekend

Tuesday 16 April 2024

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of drink driving so far this month, with two drivers giving readings of more than three times the legal limit.

Guernsey Police said those two readings were 104mcg and 122mcg - against a legal limit of 35mcg.

The police are currently running their spring anti drink drive operation, with officers stop-checking more than 80 cars since 1 April.

In total, so far this year there have been 20 arrests on suspicion of drink driving, with 91 people arrested for the offence between the start of 2023 and April 2024.

Of the eight arrests made during the first two weeks of this month, the highest reading was 122mcg.

This past weekend saw three arrests made, including two men both aged 44 who were charged for readings of 104mcg and 54mcg respectively. The third person arrested this past weekend was bailed pending further enquiries.

A spokesperson for Guernsey Police said the important campaign is ongoing.

"Everyone in the community knows that drink driving is totally unacceptable. We know this because some of the recent arrests were made following reports we’d received directly from members of the public."

The police spokesperson added: "Our message to the people who think they can get away with this reckless act is our officers will stop you, you will face court, and you could face prison."
