Saumarez Park gearing up for donkey takeover

Friday 16 August 2024

The Donkey Derby returns on Saturday promising a wacky day of races, betting and entertainment with all proceeds going to local causes.

The Lions Club of Guernsey is putting on the 53rd Derby since 1968 promising a fun day for the community which support families and individuals in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark through charitable donations and funding beneficial projects.

The Saumarez Park event opens to the public at 11:45, shortly followed by the beer tent and a performance by the Guernsey Majorettes.

The competing visiting donkeys will be on show from 12:30, with the Tote tent opening for bets in the nine races 15-minutes later.

The first race, the Skipton International Cup gets underway at 13:00, closely followed by the All-Comers Invitation.

Express reporter Kit Hannah will be looking to defend his 2023 crown in the ClearChallenger Media Trophy Sulky Race. The first heat is at 13:45 and will see him take on ITV Channel’s Roisin Gauson.

Island FM’s Holly Brown will do battle with BBC Guernsey’s Olivia Copeland in the second heat at 14:20 before the final and trophy presentation just before 15:00.

In between that the young jockeys will be back in action in The Chase at 14:30, with a slew of races following the media final.

The fifth race, In The Blink of An Eye, will start at 15:30 and be followed every 20 minutes by the Van Mossel Motormall Coronation Stakes, The Clarity Canter, the Final Furlong, and the Ray & Scott Diamond Stakes Auction, concluding just before 17:00.

Judging will be done by Jurats Peter Girard and David Robilliard MBE, with the presentation to the champion jockey at 17:00.

Jurat Heather Reed is stewarding, with Alex Fisher keeping watch over the paddock. Terry Lihou will officiate at the start line and Isabelle Vets are providing honorary services to the animals.

After the excitement of the races there’ll be an auction of prizes, a meat and fish draw and music in the beer tent into the evening from 17:00.

Robert Holder, President of Lions Club of Guernsey, said: “While we all enjoy the competitive part of any race, the main reason for us coming together every year is to provide a family fun day and in the process, to raise some money for the club so we can continue with our charitable work.

“I would like to extend a huge thank you to all those who have helped with the organisation and running of this year’s Donkey Derby... as with all these events, the list of individuals is long, but the event couldn’t happen without their support.
