Sark posties "ecstatic" with e-bikes

Monday 30 May 2022

Guernsey Post has supplied its postmen in Sark with brand new electric bikes.

The new e-bikes have nearly six times the carrying capacity in weight of the conventional pushbikes they have replaced.

"We are ecstatic with our new bikes," said Simon Adams, a postman in Sark, pictured top right.

"Our original post bikes only had a load limit of 16kg in the front basket and a 20kg rear carrier limit.

"The new bikes can take up to 200kg, which is better suited to the increase in parcels we receive."

The posties trialled a Tern 200 cargo bike before Guernsey Post purchased two news ones.

They can now be used in Sark after the island's parliament, Chief Pleas, amended their strict transport laws, which would previously have prohibited them.

Shelley Carberry, Health and Safety Manager at Guernsey Post, said: "Once the law changed in Sark to allow e-bikes, our posties got in touch about the possibility of using these on delivery and we were really happy to support the team with this.

"They can load more parcels on these bikes. With the battery power, cycling fully loaded isn’t an issue."

Sales of e-bikes to businesses and individuals have grown significantly in recent years.

In April, Guernsey hosted its first 'e-bike expo' to showcase the range of electric bikes available and their benefits.

The company EVie is now running an electric bike share scheme across the island.
