Retro Festival to return in August and September

Wednesday 29 July 2020

Following a successful first year, the Retro Festival will return next month with multiple events around the island, celebrating cultural touchstones from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

From the 14 - 16 August the Retro Festival will take over the Peninsula Hotel for a weekend of vintage music, classic cars and bikes, and a variety of family activities.

A ‘Mods & Rockers’ theme will kickstart Friday night, with acts such as The Rough Tones, High Voltage and Matt Bonneville & The Cage Shakers. The Guersney Scooter Club will also have a display of their various bikes, and the Guernsey Soul Collective will provide an array of 60s music.

Saturday will take the action outside with a Retro Guernsey Get Together from 1pm. Classic cars and bikes will be on display alongside coconut shies, face painting and a family barbecue. Live acts will bring the music through the 60s and into the 70s.

The Liberate Rainbow Chorus will be there on the Sunday with an array of 70s covers, followed by Grace Taylor of Track Not Found and Jack Heywood, a regular player of the War Poets.

From 11am-4pm that same day, there will be a picnic, classic car show, and live Jazz from prolific pianist Paul Tongs, his first festival appearance in over a decade, with a trio formed especially for the Retro Festival.

They will be joined later in the evening by an acoustic set from The Day Trippers, a Motown-and-ABBA inspired set from Les Blondettes, and a headline set from The Recks.

A DJ set will close Sunday evening with a ‘funkalicious 70s soundtrack.’

Those who wish to attend are invited to look the part by dressing up to get into the nostalgic spirit of the event.

A second Retro Festival is planned for 18-20 September in the old HMV building in Market Square, with bands such as Clameur Du Haro, The Risk and Sons of the Desert, which will be free for frontline healthcare workers.

Tickets for the August Retro Festival are £5 per day, or £10 for the entire weekend, and are available from the Peninsula Hotel, Beau Sejour or Ray and Scott Jewellers. Visitors are able to camp on-site for £25 per night, or stay in the hotel for £90 per night. Frontline healthcare workers can receive a discount of £20 per person, per night, on their accommodation for the Festival.
