Passengers told electrical failure to blame for Blue Islands’ emergency landing

Friday 10 January 2025

Passengers on the Blue Islands flight which had to turn back shortly after take-off from Guernsey were told that there had been an electrical failure.

The plane, which was bound for Jersey, landed safely with the airport firefighters in attendance.

Those on board were taken back to the terminal in a bus while the ATR 72-500, G-ISLM, was then towed off the runway.

Guernsey Airport was closed as a result of the incident, with flights from Southampton and Gatwick holding overhead.

Blue Islands put on another flight to get people across to Jersey.

One of those onboard was Rich Ogier, who called it an "eventful day".

"The pilot said after we landed that it was an electrical failure," he said after eventually arriving in Jersey for a day trip.

"Everybody was fine. It was only about five minutes that we were up in the air, so I don't think anyone really knew too much what was going on because obviously there was no announcement because there was no power.

"One of the stewardesses said we'd divert back to Guernsey, but we didn't know the reason at the time."

A Blue Islands spokesperson said the flight had reported a technical issue and landed safely, met by the emergency services as is standard procedure.

They said that safety of passengers, crew and aircraft was its number one priority at all times.

The additional service to Jersey was due to leave at 11:30, but was slightly delayed before landing at 12:06.
