Restaurateurs rally together following Octopus fire

Monday 26 February 2024

Several competitors to the now destroyed Octopus restaurant have offered words of support and friendship, with the hope the venue can return to serving customers soon.

The popular restaurant burned down in the early hours of 24 February with fire fighters and dozens of law enforcement and civil protection volunteers working throughout the day to stop the flames and manage the fallout.

Several town and seafront-based establishments quickly offered condolences in the wake of the tragedy as islanders awoke on Saturday morning.

‘We would like to send all our care and support to our good friends Mike, Delphine and all their amazing team. Love and support from all the team at Pier 17,” the restaurant, which is located on Albert Pier, said on Facebook.

In an emotional post, Havelet neighbours The Slaughterhouse said “for over six years, Octopus wasn’t just a view from our window, it was a cherished companion of Guernsey’s community”.

Just up the hill, The Terrace said: “May the power of thoughts and prayers surround our fellow restaurateurs Delphine and Mike like a warm embrace. Know that you are loved and supported and that you will emerge from this stronger than ever."

Balthazar added: “Our hearts go out to our fellow restaurateurs and their team during this difficult time. Wishing them strength and resilience as they rebuild.

Local singer Emily Fern was first offered a gig to sing at Octopus seven years ago. She posted an emotional tribute to the restaurant – her “second home” - and the management.

“Delphine and Mike and have not only been my biggest supporters but the kindest, caring, hardworking people I have ever met in my life and probably ever will meet.

“Every weekend I have spent in Guernsey since leaving school seven years ago I have sung in this beautiful restaurant. My Fridays, Sundays, and empty Saturdays will not be the same. I will miss you deeply and can't wait for the day that I'll be back singing.”

Meanwhile, Vazon-based Vistas said they were sending “positive thoughts and prayers to their fellow restaurateurs.

“We hope everyone is safe and all of you recover from this.”

Cobo Tea Room said it was good no-one was harmed and “wish you all the very best in starting your next chapter.

Little Big Brew Co said while the news was “devastating” they would be standing by to “always support” the venue in future: “Allez Les Octopus”.

Chef James Ferguson said “All our love to you both and all your team, anything we can do just shout."

The messages of support came from further afield too, with The Blonde Hedgehog adding: “Sending you all huge love from Alderney”.

Herm Island offered a trip away to staff affected. Craig Senior said on behalf of the island’s management to “please accept once everything calms down my personal invitation to come over and escape for a day or two and chill.

“If we can help in any other way, please let me know”.

Octopus' owners said on Saturday that it will be back.
