Emergency services to conduct test for electrical vehicle fire

Saturday 23 November 2024

Guernsey’s blue light services will be conducting a joint training exercise tomorrow to test their response to a potential fire at the harbor.

The exercise will involve staff from Guernsey Ports, Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance & Rescue Guernsey, Bailiwick Law Enforcement, Condor Ferries, and Civil Protection volunteers.

The scenario will simulate a fire in a busy car check-in area. It will include firefighting, evacuation, and other safety procedures.

It is scheduled to take place between 09:00 and 11:30 (Sunday, 24th November). However residents in town may notice some changes this evening. Parking on the East Arm will be suspended from 18:00, and access to the approach road will be suspended until the completion of the exercise.

The exercise will also involve the use of smoke machines, and people around the Town Seafront may notice increased noise and activity from emergency service vehicles.

Guernsey Ports' Assistant Harbour Master, Mike Harris, and Guernsey Fire & Rescue Services' Watch Commander, Matthew Roger, will direct the exercise.

Mr Harris said: "Public safety is our highest priority and the exercise will test our procedures and help us improve our emergency plans where necessary. It is essential that our emergency services get regular opportunities to train together to prepare for incidents that would endanger life and our critical infrastructure.

"People around the Town Seafront may notice increased noise and activity from emergency service vehicles during the exercise, and we ask for their patience and understanding during this time.”
