A Cocker Spaniel which was left in the care of the GSPCA when her owner died now needs a life saving operation.

Ellie will also need care after her operation if the animal welfare charity is able to afford the surgery.

Described as a "very loving and sweet eight year old Cocker Spaniel," the pup has only been at the animal shelter since this autumn when her owner sadly passed away.

Since then the GSPCA has paid for treatment to a mouth infection and some other ailments. She was also due to be spayed last week, which is when a large mass was found on her spleen which needed emergency treatment.

The charity said that lump has been sent away to discover if it is cancerous while Ellie remains under the care of the staff and volunteer at the GSPCA, who said she was "very poorly after her ordeal."

Ellie has proven very popular during her fairly short stay at the animal shelter. Beckie Bailey, GSPCA Animal Care Assistant, said; “On my days off I have been taking Ellie out and about and she has been to many beaches and even Herm.

“We all really love Ellie, she is so sweet and we are doing all we can after her recent life saving operation.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Ellie is an incredible dog and all the team love her very much.

“It was a real shock last week when the large mass on her spleen was discovered and we are now appealing to help this amazing dog.”

Lorna Prince GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager said “Last week Ellie needed an emergency splenectomy.

“They have sent the mass off for testing to determine whether it is problematic for Ellie.”

The charity thinks Ellie's operation and care will cost at least £2,000, providing there are no post operation problems and the lump doesn't cause any future complications.

Isabelle Vets has helped with Ellie's treatment and operation so far, at a reduced cost, but the charity would like to recoup some of the money if it can. Donations can be made at justgiving.com/fundraising/gspcaellieappeal

Mr Byrne said; “please help donate towards this amazing dog as well as the other 500 animals in our care this Christmas.

“We have set up a Just Giving page justgiving.com/fundraising/gspcaellieappeal but there are many ways to help Ellie and the other animals at the GSPCA.”

“We will of course keep everyone up to date on how Ellie is over the festive period.”
