Jersey Police HQ evacuated due to historic bombs

Tuesday 28 November 2023

Part of Jersey police headquarters had to be evacuated and the surrounding road closed after a member of the public took in two historic bomb devices.

Just before 09:00 yesterday morning, two historic incendiary devices were taken into the building by a member of the public who wanted to declare the devices and asked for some advice.

The States of Jersey Police had to close La Route du Fort - the road that the police HQ is on - and sections of the police station were evacuated for safety reasons.

The island's Bomb Disposal Officer (BDO) was called to safely remove and discharge the devices elsewhere.

The road was reopened later in the day, when staff also returned to their offices.

In a statement issued following the incident, Jersey police said: "We must remind the public that if they find any such items, to leave them in situ and to call police so that qualified personnel can attend and safely remove them."

Guernsey Police have similar guidance for anyone finding something they suspect to be explosive here.

The Guernsey Police website states: "If you find anything that you think may contain explosives, please do not touch or move it.

"Make sure you and anyone near you is safe and telephone the Police on 725111 or in an emergency, call 999."
