"Phenomenal" response to knitting appeal

Monday 21 March 2022

Collection points have been set up for donations of knitted baby hats for Ukraine following an unprecedented response to one islander’s appeal.

Lilita Kruze initially organised the installation of collection points in Waitrose's Admiral Park and Rohais stores.

And this morning she told Express that there are now collection points at the following churches as well: Vale Church, St Matthews Church at the Guet, Cobo St Marie du Castel at Rectory Hill and St Saviour’s Parish Church.

Last weekend, Express reported on Ms Kruze’s call for others to join her in knitting hats for newborn babies in the war-torn country.

“After my appeal was publicised, my phone didn’t stop ringing all day on the Monday with calls from individuals, care homes and church groups,” said Ms Kruze.

“I have 70 people signed up already, including some in Alderney, and I know there are many more people who are busy knitting for the project.

“I would like to thank the people of Guernsey for the phenomenal response to my appeal."

Ms Kruze said the response was unprecedented.

“As a result of the unexpectedly high response, I organised two collection points.

"I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to management at Waitrose for their swift and positive reaction.”

Donations will be sent to assist Ukrainian refugees.

Organisations supported will include a maternity hospital in Riga in Latvia, where there is a high number of pregnant women and mothers fleeing the war with their newborn babies.
