Local appeal to support Notre Dame rebuild

Thursday 18 April 2019

The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society has launched a local appeal for funds to help rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The world-famous cathedral went up in flames on Monday evening, with millions of pounds already pledged to help with the reconstruction of Paris' landmark.

Billionaire art collector Francois Pinault, who saved Hauteville House from disrepair last year, is among those donating to the cause.

"As we contemplate the fire in Paris our thoughts turn to Victor Hugo's great novel - 'Notre-Dame de Paris'," said a spokesperson for the Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society. "It was Hugo and this novel that revised enthusiasm for the gothic architecture of medieval Europe."

Victor Hugo is known to have had a passion for medieval art and architecture, working to preserve historic buildings in his time.

"Hugo took an interest in the medieval castles of Guernsey," the spokesperson continued. "With the destruction of Vale Castle, he gave support to his friend Henri Marquand who vigorously campaigned for the preservation of the castle.

"Islanders and visitors alike should remember Hugo as a champion of Guernsey's medieval heritage. Victor Hugo was an optimist. He saw the cathedral of Notre Dame restored thanks to his efforts. And in these sad days we should remember Notre Dame in Paris and offer our help."

The society is accepting donations online here. Cheques can be sent by post to The Notre Dame Appeal, Le Caprice, Cobo Coast Road, Castel, GY5 7HE. Fletcher Sports will also be accepting cash towards the appeal at its stores in the Arcade and on the Bridge.

All donations will be listed in a register and sent to Paris with the consolidated amount. There will be an option for anonymity if requested.

The society works to promote the life and works of Victor Hugo and his family during their time of exile in Guernsey. It holds a conference in the island each year attracting many visitors, particularly from France.
