New uniforms herald change at Elizabeth College

New uniforms have been revealed to usher in a new era for Elizabeth College and its co-educational future.

The historically ‘all-boys’ school has taken the opportunity to modernise and update its uniform in preparation for girls joining the school in September.

The decision to make EC co-educational was announced early last year to “recognise the needs of contemporary society and build on our well-established co-educational offering in the Junior School.”

“It is to some extent a non-gender specific uniform,” said acting-Principal, Rick James.

“Girls will have the option of wearing a knee length tartan skirt, there’ll also have the option to wear grey trousers much like the boys,” he said.

“There’s also a new sports kit that has been launched, not because we were becoming co-educational, but because it was timely to review our kit.

“The intention is to rationalise what we offer so that it reduces the cost to parents."

It’s not just the uniforms that are being revamped. With the introduction of girls to the school, several other changes have taken place.

“We’ve looked at our facilities, toilet facilities most obviously, but changing rooms as well," said Mr James. "We were due for a redevelopment of the changing rooms but now we’re doing them with a particular eye to be co-educational."

“We’ve looked at our curriculum, there are a number of things we’ve introduced because they form part of a better physical education offering. We have netball and from next year we’ll have dance,” he added.
