New app 'gameifys' coastal cleanups

Sunday 31 March 2019

A new app designed to help people clean up their community's coast line was demonstrated at a recent British-Irish Council symposium focused on marine litter.

Representatives from C5 Alliance attended to showcase the Coastal Clean Up app, which is in its testing phase and will soon be available on the App Store.

The app tracks the distribution of marine plastic along the coastline by “gamifying” collection by itsusers. Data collected through the app will be shared with the Marine Conservation Society, contributing to national research on marine litter.

The symposium itself saw Guernsey's Environment & Infrastructure Committee commit to a number of measures to help reduce the amount of plastic in the sea around the island.

Marc Lainé, Managing Director of the C5 Alliance Guernsey Division, said: “It was a real honour to attend the BIC symposium as it is relatively unheard of for commercial enterprises to be invited to such events. The app was developed by four of our bursary students alongside an intern at the Discover Digital Internship programme run by the Digital Greenhouse. We are very pleased with the final product and hope it will help to combat marine pollution locally and further afield.

"Going forward we also hope to encourage partners who may be interested in investing in this development, with the potential for it to be adapted for other purposes.”

Julia Henney, Biodiversity Education Officer, representing the Biodiversity Partnership, added: “As well as nurdles and marine industry litter, the BIC meeting also focussed on Education. We are fortunate that a group of organisations in Guernsey are already making great strides to highlight the threats of marine plastic pollution, as well as the small steps we can all take to tackle the problem.

"Charities such as Pick it up Guernsey, Plastic Free Guernsey and La Société Marine Biology Section, amongst other grass-roots movements, such as Found on the Beach in Guernsey, are providing inspiration to show what can be achieved when we all work together. Whilst organisations such as C5 Alliance and Guernsey Recycling Group are creating practical solutions. I was very proud to be able to discuss these initiatives at the BIC and to hear of thegreat work being undertaken across other jurisdictions.”
