Fresh praise for Notre Dame

Thursday 16 November 2023

One of Guernsey's schools has received an outstandingly-good report following an inspection by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate.

Notre Dame Du Rosaire Primary received one outstanding and two goods in its recent review - which follows an "extremely positive" inspection by Ofsted earlier this year.

The Catholic Schools Inspectorate is said to follow the same system as Ofsted, assessing areas and rating them on a scale of 1-4.

In its recent Catholic Schools Inspectorate review, Notre Dame received a 1, or an outstanding, for its approach to Catholic Life and Mission, which is described as "an extremely high rating".

The inspection report said the school was excellent at promoting the social teaching of the church through charity work, Fairtrade status and Laudato Si. Through this work, the report said, pupils were able to identify why and articulate how the Catholic faith influences action.

The report also said the behaviour of pupils was "exemplary, respect was shown to all, and Notre Dame was an inclusive and happy school".

The school was also awarded a 2, or ‘good’, for Religious Education, and a 2 for Collective Worship.

Mary Robertshaw is Headteacher at Notre Dame Du Rosaire. She said the positive inspection is down to the hard work of her staff and the strong values shared by all.

“I’m delighted to see all of our staff’s hard work reflected in this report. We take great pride in reflecting Notre Dame’s Catholic character in general school life, and in turn showing how those strong values drive the inclusive ethos of our school community. To have this recognised in such positive words by the Inspectorate is wonderful.

“I am very proud of all of our pupils, staff and supportive parents, carers and community. There were of course some points to learn from in the report, but it was very positive about what we do, so we will continue to build on that and develop our current curriculum to make it stronger still.”

Education, Sport and Culture said the report also highlighted that Christ was clearly at the centre of the school community, and how that drove a strong culture of welcome to all.

The Catholic Schools Inspectorate also commended the strong leadership of Mrs Robertshaw and her team, and it highlighted how great pride was taken in ensuring the school environment reflected its Catholic character.

When the news was reported on social media by the States of Guernsey past teachers joined others in congratulating Mrs Robertshaw and the school community for the praise received.

Gary Darling said: "My first teaching job when I moved back to Guernsey in 1988. Six happy years before moving on to St Mary and St Michael at Delancey. Well done to Mary Robertshaw and team."

Current headteacher at St Mary and St Michael, Helen Willetts offered her conongratulations to Mrs Robertshaw, Mrs Cable, staff and pupils, calling it: "A well-deserved outcome".

Former Notre Dame teacher and long time supply teacher for the school, Helen Foxen said it was "so lovely to read about" the positive report, which reflected the "dedication and hard work from all the lovely staff".

Blanchelande College commented: "Many congratulations to Mrs Robertshaw and her staff at Notre Dame on this well-deserved inspection result."

Richard James, a former teacher at Elizabeth College offered his "congratulations to Notre Dame staff and students".
