Notre Dame students donate to Ukrainian refugees

Students and staff at Notre Dame du Rosaire Primary School have filled a van with donations of toiletries for Ukrainian refugees.

Headteacher, Mary Robertshaw, said pupils at the school were motivated to help aid efforts for the war-torn country.

“As a Catholic school, we have children of all nationalities at Notre Dame, including Ukrainian and Russian children, said Mrs Robertshaw."

“The children felt that it was important to try and do something to help and we decided to start a collection drive for the refugees," said Mrs Robertshaw.

Students and staff were asked to donate toiletries including nappies, nappy cream, baby wipes, toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo.

“We have filled a van with all the donations we received, and they will be delivered to refugees through the Humanitarian Aid Campaign linked to Crepe Maison,” said Mrs Robertshaw.

Notre Dame student Elaina Blampied was pleased to be able to make a donation.

“I am so glad we were able to help the people in Ukraine; we just wanted to make sure they have enough supplies,” she said.

“I feel terrible that this has happened to them.”

Mrs Robertshaw said that teachers at Notre Dame have discussed the war with students.

“We broached the subject [of the war] in our daily worship and some questions and worries were raised which the teachers were able to sensitively deal with,” she said.

“When it has been necessary, staff have discussed the situation, for example showing students where Ukraine is on the world map and reassuring the children who have been scared.

“We have also been able to remind children than many people in Russia do not want this war either, so it is important not to blame other people.”

Year Six pupil Isabella Smith explained why she wanted to offer her help: “I think it is important that the people of Ukraine are supported by our donations because their lives matter just as much as ours.

“We all hope our donations will help Ukraine during this war and that the fighting will soon come to an end.”

Rosie Mansell related events in Ukraine to Guernsey’s experience of war.

“I hope our donations will support people in Ukraine while they are struggling,” she said.

“We were once in a war and people in Ukraine need help just like we did.”
