My five things about Guernsey...with Tiffany Matthews

Friday 11 January 2019

Tiffany Matthews, 26, was educated at the Ladies College and spent several years away living away in places like Italy and Norway before returning to the island last year. She has a deep love for photography, food and Poppy - her dog.

"If I could go back 10 years and tell myself that one day I would love this island, I wouldn’t believe you," the Guernsey-girl-done-good talks about how the island of her birth inspires and nurtures her creativity. The accompanying photos are all taken in Guernsey, by Tiffany.

1. I'll admit it took a lifetime to appreciate where I came from...

Up until October last year I never liked Guernsey. I would constantly say "I hate this island", "it’s far too small" and my most used phrase was "there’s nothing to do." I felt claustrophobic and stuck. It would feel impossible to get off the island and when I did I never wanted to come back. That being said I lived away for many years but always found that somehow or another I would return almost like I was on an invisible bungee cord.

2. Sometimes absence really does make the heart grow fonder

In August I took my entire life to Norway and thought it was a move for life. I managed two months living there and had to come back. Those two months were spent seeking employment, sitting inside my apartment due to the constant bad weather and basically doing very, very little for a lot of money (Norway is outrageously expensive). However this short stint made me see Guernsey in a very different light.

3. The great outdoors

I came back and loved being outside again, even in the bad weather! I had missed the short scenic commute to work, saying 'hello' to people you know walking down the street and most of all the quiet, calm pace of life.

4. The island means business.

Guernsey also has a fantastic way of cushioning young business, due to its very small population, which means networking and growing a company is much much easier. My business over the past year has grown in ways I would never ever have expected all because of Guernsey.

5. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

If I could go back 10 years and tell myself that one day I would love this island, I wouldn’t believe you. However I truly feel that my relationship with this island has grown and I may even say that now I actually love this quaint island and could even see my future being here too.

Tiffany can be commissioned for portraits, commercial work and artistic projects, more of her work can be viewed online here.
