Library links with London for latest museums event

Saturday 06 October 2018

When is a library not a library? When it's a fun palace of course!

The latest event organised by Guernsey Museums sees them link up with the Guille Alles Library for another day of Fun Palace themed activities.

The Digital Greenhouse is also getting involved this year, with a modern edge on the theme of 'hands on learning'.

There'll be a live link up between Guernsey's main library at the Market Square and London during the day, thanks to the friendship between staff at both locations.

The venue in London is the Boundary Estate in East London, the world’s first planned council estate and the filming location for part of the movie, The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society. The link up will see timetabled sessions where visitors can join in with shared reading, make models, play music and learn rhymes.

The link up is also an opportunity for the different communities to get to know each other. A new activity has also been developed for the occasion called ‘Lingo Bingo’ which will introduce Londoners to Guernsey French, while participants in Guernsey can have a go at some Cockney rhyming slang.

As well as the live link up, there are a number of other activities planned, including talks by the popular Fred Gallienne, who is a regular participant at events put on by the museums service.

He'll be taking part in the 'living libraries' concept which Deputy Chief Librarian Jodie Knight said is always popular.

“Living libraries is the idea of instead of searching for something in a book, you can ask a person who knows about it. Instead of reading, you can have a conversation with them. This year our Fun Palaces includes libraries on Guernsey language, living through the occupation and the history of coins.”

On the science side of things, there will also be engineering activities, Harry Potter experiments and ‘science things to see & do’ hosted by Maker Space. For the more artistically minded, there is Regency dancing, textile crafts and special trails for the weekend.

Jo Dowding, Access & Learning Manager at Guernsey Museums has helped to organise all of the activities.

This day is a chance to celebrate the shared history of the Library and Museum. Every day we deal with artefacts which are labelled with thenames ‘Guille & Allès’; we know these men as two of the founding collectors of the Museum. The front windows of the library still bear the word ‘Museum’ too.”
