Leadership changes at The Guernsey Party

Tuesday 13 December 2022

Deputy Simon Vermeulen has been unanimously appointed as the new parliamentary leader of The Guernsey Party following the departure of Deputy Mark Helyar.

Robert Milroy has also been appointed as the Chair and Leader of the party outside of the States, replacing Victoria Russell.

Deputy Vermeulen told Express he now wants to “sit down with our members and discuss further the second half” of the current political term and added that the party’s priorities are unlikely to “differ significantly from those set out at the election”.

He said meetings with the party will take place over Christmas to discuss its future strategy, but his current focus is on the final States’ meeting of the year which is set to begin this Wednesday.

Deputy Mark Helyar announced he was leaving The Guernsey Party as a member and its Leader in the States last month, citing personal and political reasons for doing so.

He also held the role of Chair and Leader of the party as it went into the 2020 election, before handing over those responsibilities to Ms Russell.

Ms Russell said it has “been a privilege to support” the party since its inception in 2020 and looks forward to “seeing what the future holds for the Party endorsed deputies and for party politics in Guernsey generally”.

Mr Milroy, who has been involved with the party since the 2020 election and previously served as Deputy Chair, claimed he was honoured to assume his new roles.

I take this opportunity to thank Victoria Russell for all her hard work and dedication over the past couple of years.  I look forward to working with the deputies, members of the Party and the wider community in my new role,” he said.
