Suspended sentence for vodka-fuelled revenge

Sunday 25 August 2019

A 21-year-old, who moved to Guernsey from the UK recently to work as a chef, has been given a suspended prison sentence after pouring water over two of his colleague's laptops.

Caileb Richardson had been staying in staff accommodation when he fell out with two of his colleagues, who also lived in the building.

After drinking an entire bottle of vodka on 3 August this year, Richardson decided to take revenge on the pair by soaking both of their laptops and extension leads with water.

Whilst he was at it, the defendant also poured water over one of his colleague's clothes before putting them in the toilet.

Richardson told officers he had been feeling "victimised" at work and said he wouldn't have committed the crimes if he had not been drinking.

When examined, both laptops were said to be irreparable.

"The drinking is an issue that you need to get on top of," said Judge McKerrell on sentencing. "When people live in close proximity tensions can arise. The way that you dealt with it was simply inappropriate."

The defendant was given a 28 day suspended prison sentence, which he will have to serve if he commits any further crimes in the island within the next 18 months. The sentence would not take into account the 17 days Richardson has already spent in custody, having no formal address.

He will also have to pay a total of £1,389 in compensation to the two victims.

Following the incident, Richardson has lost both his job and staff accommodation.
