Experienced plantsman needed at Grow

Tuesday 27 February 2024

Charity, Grow is looking to appoint an experienced plantsman to lead its vinery team.

Horticulture continues to play a major part in the training and mentoring provided for the crew, which includes adults with learning disabilities and difficulties, despite the opportunities being expanded following the complete redevelopment of the charity's Coutanchez site.

Stuart Smale, Horticulture Manager said: "We are looking for someone with experience in gardening and plant maintenance. Their knowledge will help ensure our plants are kept in good condition whilst working alongside the Crew, who have varying needs and abilities, tutoring them in plant management. Plant sales are a major revenue stream for us and it is important the plants are maintained in top condition. We don’t use any herbicides or pesticides so it is essential to recognise any plant health irregularities early and “nip them in the bud’."

Mr Smale continued: "It is important for all the supervisory team to have an understanding of individuals’ abilities in order to develop and help build confidence and skills. Working in the vinery encourages interaction with the wider community, breaking down social barriers. Grow is unique in the service we offer, providing an array of mental and physical health benefits for our Crew and their families and carers."

Fin Ward works in the vinery where he is responsible for managing the production of vegetables and salad crops.

"The therapeutic benefit of working with plants is well known for improving physical and mental health, as well as communication and thinking skills," he said.

"In the vinery the Crew learn to sow seeds, repot the young seedlings and tend the plants as they develop. It is very rewarding to see how the Crew nurture the plants and then enjoy taking home the produce they have grown to share with their families and carers."

A full job description for the Horticulturalist role can be found on the Grow website.
