La Société looks to the future

Sunday 19 March 2023

The President of La Société Guernesiais, Roy Bisson is preparing to stand down, with Trevor Bourgaize the next to lead the organisation.

Mr Bisson has been president for a year, during what he said was a challenging period, post-covid.

“Covid completely devastated so many aspects of La Société’s work and what has been so rewarding is the pace and enthusiasm of its members to get back on to the job,” he said.

Having taken over the role immediately post pandemic, Mr Bisson's tenure has been focused on seeing those work streams resume and he believes Mr Bourgaize is the right man to continue the progress.

“Trevor Bourgaize is a long-standing member of La Société, having served as both Ornithology Section secretary and more recently as Entomology Section secretary," explained Mr Bisson.

"He is a qualified bird ringer who supports La Société’s Nature Guernsey group, hosting bird ringing demonstrations.  He is responsible for producing Guernsey's annual Moth and Butterfly report. Although a naturalist at heart, his interests extend to all aspects of island life and the society. I feel sure the organisation will be in good hands.”

Mr Bourgaize will be confirmed as La Société's new president at the AGM at the Frossard Theatre at Candie on Wednesday 22 March, starting at 19:30.

The AGM will include a talk on Guernsey Barn Owls by Julie Davis, Team Leader of the Guernsey Barn Owl Survey, which has reviewed the breeds current status and what the future holds for them.

Mr Bisson said the work of La Société covers many areas with recommendations made on land use and planting schemes, encouraging the use of native species which are essential in maintaining the islands’ biodiversity, as well as its various research projects.

“The society is an assembly of at least 12 disciplines, each making a contribution to our understanding of Guernsey’s history, structure and nature," he said.

"The observation and recording work of our past and present membership is proving invaluable in future planning for harbour, waste, granite quarrying and building developments.”
