Kevin McDonnell moved to Guernsey in 2014 after meeting his now fiancée. He works as a musculoskeletal, Strength & Conditioning Coach and focuses on helping other people achieve their fitness goals.
He is currently training for the London Marathon but he took time out of his busy schedule to share with Express his five things he'd change about Guernsey.
1) Improved school nutrition
Adolescence is a time of growth for children, for both their physical and mental development. A healthy diet is essential for teenagers because of their heightened nutritional needs, but also because the foods they eat as teenagers can impact their health as they grow and when they become adults. Healthy eating also promotes good food habits which will last a lifetime.
2) Cheaper flights
Many flights can be astonishingly cheap, for those who spend hours searching the internet for the best deals. But not in Guernsey, where non locals miss out on quality family time with their loved ones and friends from back home because of the expense getting here. Also, that cafe at the airport is charging extortionate prices. People are struggling and things like this just don’t help.
3) Get a McDonald’s and KFC
Totally contradictory to all my beliefs and my first answer!
People love to hate fast food. The industry offers cheap, low-quality products. It teaches kids bad eating habits. Its deep-fried calories are contributing to the obesity epidemic and other health problems plaguing the nation.
But it tastes good; everything in moderation!
4) Beach gyms
As they’re free and easily accessible, these gyms could be open to anyone and the equipment can be designed to cater for all fitness levels. Some gyms could be suitable for all ages, but others for ages 14 and over.
With instructions on how to safely use the equipment, and which part of your body it’ll train, to help you burn off that McDonald’s!
5) Negativity
it’s nearly impossible to rid negative thoughts, people and situations altogether (we’ll always have good and bad days), but we can choose to strip away the parts of our life that bring us down and instead refocus that energy towards being the best versions of ourselves.
Be yourself but better! (Excuse the pun)
Scientific research indicates that negativity is contagious. Smile, be happy, treat others like you would like to be treated, stress less and live longer.
Mr McDonnell is training for the 2018 London Marathon which is being held on 22 April. He is raising money for the local charity, Every Child, Our Future.
