Joint campaigns for Channel Islands fire services

Wednesday 03 April 2019

Guernsey's Fire and Rescue Service is teaming up with its equivalent in Jersey this week to plan for inter-island public protection and fire prevention campaigns.

Supported by Islands Insurance, the services are looking to deliver all campaigns across the Channel Islands at the same time as both Bailiwicks face similar fire-related risks.

"We are extremely pleased to be launching these pan-island safety initiatives with our fire service colleagues in Jersey," said Head of Fire and Safety in Guernsey, Martin Lucas. "By working together in partnership with Jersey Fire & Rescue Service and Islands Insurance, we hope to make the Channel Islands a safer place to live.”

As the Easter holidays approach and the weather begins to improve, more people will take to their boats often unaware of potential fire-related dangers. Both services will tackle this in their first campaign - highlighting the importance of having smoke and carbon monoxide detectors fitted to boats.

"It makes total sense for us to join forces on these critical public protection campaigns," said Jersey Station Commander, Ryan Hall. "We face the same challenges so why not tackle them together? By working with the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service and Islands Insurance we're saving time, money and duplication of effort whilst ensuring that we reach the widest possible audience."

The services are in the process of planning further 2019 campaigns covering the following:

  • Weather awareness and flooding
  • White goods - register your appliance
  • BBQs and summer safety
  • Camping safety
  • Electrical fire safety
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home
  • Bonfire and firework safety
  • Christmas safety

Sales and Marketing Director for Islands Insurance, Jim Purkiss added: "We at Islands Insurance are enormously proud of our association with both Jersey and Guernsey Fire and Rescue Services. The public awareness campaigns they deliver undoubtedly save lives. By joining forces we hope that these campaigns will be even more effective."
