Guernsey 2021 - locals get creative

Sunday 21 April 2019

Entries for the NatWest International Island Games Guernsey 2021 medal design competition are rolling in but there is still time to submit your ideas if you haven't yet.

Athletes from 24 different islands will travel to Guernsey in two years' time to participate in 14 different sports.

Although the Island Games are known as friendly the medals are still important to those participants who win one and will act as a lifetime reminder of their achievement.

"We've had some great designs so far," said Communications and Events Director for the Games Amanda Hibbs. "I really wasn't sure what to expect but the quality and creativity of the entries have exceeded our expectations.

"We've received quite a mix of entries and the competition is open to everyone. A few people have said they are worried about drawing their entries but we can create computer generated versions of the medals to see what they will look like. Also, if people want to work together in a team we're happy to receive any joint entries."

The overall winner's design will be used for all of the medals throughout the 2021 Games. They will be given their own commemorative set of medals and will have the chance to present the medals at one of the events during the week. All of the shortlisted finalists will receive VIP tickets for the opening ceremony of the Games.

The judging panel is made up of Island Games athletes who will shortlist three designs. A public vote will then be held throughout August and September to select the winning design, which will be announced in October.

All medals should be able to hang on a ribbon around the neck and must include the words 'Guernsey 2021 NatWest International Island Games XIX' as well as the logo of the International Island Games Association ether on the front or the back.

All entries should be sent to info@guernsey2021.gg or by post to Guernsey 2021 NatWest International Island Games, Medal Design Competition, La Villiaze, St Andrew's, Guernsey, GY6 8YP by 31 May 2019.
