Romanian pianist promises an ideal evening for those new to classical music

Friday 01 March 2024

Two evenings before International Women’s Day, Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu will bring the Nutcracker suite to St James.

She has been touring the world with her innovative show The Nutcracker for the last seven years and now a Guernsey audience will be able to experience it on Wednesday 6 March, as part of the Fanny Davies International Piano Series.

While she’s left the holographic ballerina that has been featured in that tour behind, Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular suite provides the finale of her exciting recital programme.

Her motto that "dedicating your life to art is the most rewarding thing one can do" is one she lives up to. A pianist from the age of seven, Alexandra has toured the world since graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music, performing in London, New York, Vienna, Amsterdam and China.

She champions lesser-known composers in her recital programming, favouring more challenging pieces to perform.

The first half of her FDIPS recital includes pieces by Lili Boulanger and Chopin.

The performance promises to be lively and interesting, ideal for those new to classical music.

Fanny Davies International Piano Series, now in its fifth year, was created to bring international professional pianists to new audiences of all ages in Guernsey at an affordable ticket price.

The relaxed and informal setting at St James means the audience is much closer to the performer than in larger concert halls. The series also includes afternoon workshops for local piano students, which anyone who wants to listen can enjoy free of charge.

Professor of piano at the RNCM, Alexandra is also a Cultural Ambassador of Romania and the Friends of Europe’s Young European Leader.

Tickets are £10, free for under 18s, available from stjames.gg, boxoffice@stjames.gg, and 711361. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Workshops start at 4pm, entry to listen is free.
