Funerals limited to ten people

Monday 25 January 2021

Due to the current lockdown, funeral attendance has been reduced to only ten people, as churches close their doors to the public.

It has been announced alongside the suspension of public worship across the island.

“We are re-introducing a limit of ten people who can attend,” said Vice-President of Policy & Resources, Deputy Heidi Soulsby. "And they must observe social distancing.”

The restrictions were announced during the second media briefing since Guernsey went into a sudden lockdown on Saturday.

Church leaders in Guernsey met via zoom on Saturday, discussing what should be done to protect the community but allow people to continue to worship if they choose to do so.

“The life and worship of our churches will continue in private prayer, in live-streamed services, and in other ways in which we can serve our community safely,” said the Dean of Guernsey, the Very Reverend Tim Barker.

The churches have made the decision to suspend public worship, close most church buildings and record the details of anyone who has to enter. Details of any live streamed service can be on local church websites.

All churches are adapting their own services in slightly different ways. St Saviour's and Torteval churches, for example, are uploading their Sunday service to YouTube so that people can watch it at a convenient time.

“We want to express our warmest thanks to the staff of the States of Guernsey and our political leaders, we offer our prayers for them and for all the people of Guernsey,” the seven church leaders concluded.

The States of Guernsey have released the following guidelines for anyone planning a funeral during lockdown:
