Gozo voted into Island Games family

Monday 11 July 2022

The International Island Games Association has finished its tour of Guernsey in preparation for next year’s island games and concluded the trip with an AGM on Saturday (9 July) where the group voted in a new island, Gozo.

Representatives from Gozo were in Guernsey over the weekend, joining other islands in visiting the sports and accommodation venues available for next year’s games.

A vote was taken at the Annual General Meeting at Les Cotils to officially invite Gozo to join the games. The island sits in the Mediterranean Sea and has a population of 33,000.

“We are delighted to welcome Gozo to the Island Games family,” said Chair of the IIGA, Jorgen Peterson.

“It is the first time in almost 20 years that we will welcome a new island and we are looking forward to seeing their team in Guernsey next year.”

Kevin Azzopardi is Gozo’s Technical Director, he visited Guernsey over the weekend and said the island is looking forward to 2023.

“We are really looking forward to our first appearance in the Games in Guernsey. We have a preliminary idea of the sports we will bring - we’re looking at shooting, athletics, cycling, badminton, football, tennis and table tennis so we’re looking at quite a mix.”
