Providers and recipients of youth work encouraged to share their stories

The Youth Commission is encouraging people to get 'ambitious for youth work' this week, and celebrate the positive impact it can have on young people in the Bailiwick.

National Youth Work Week runs from until Friday 6 November and is being marked by clubs and organisations across the British Isles.

This year's theme is being 'ambitious for youth work' and the Youth Commission is asking islanders to show their support throughout the week.

They can do so by printing out one of the 'I/We are ambitious for youth work' signs from the charity's website, posing for a photo with it and posting it on social media with the hashtag #YWW2020. Anyone with a positive experience of engaging with youth work or working within the sector is encouraged to include their story in the text of the post.

“We have a vibrant youth sector across Guernsey and Alderney which provides young people lots of opportunities to develop their personal, social, and emotional skills.," said Service Lead for the Youth Commission, Aaron Davies.

"Youth Work Week give us the chance to celebrate and raise awareness of the positive impact that organisations, clubs, groups, and troops across the Bailiwick have on the lives of our young people and to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the young people that access those projects each week.”

Youth work takes a holistic approach to helping young people, by focusing on their personal and social development. It usually involves young people between the ages of eight and 25 and aims to help them build confidence and the life skills they will need to reach their full potential.

The Youth Commission is an independent local charity which is responsible for delivering youth work for young people aged four to 25 in the Bailiwick. It offers social groups and activities for young people as well as one-to-one support.

Last year, the charity work with more than 6,500 individuals in the Bailiwick, delivering over 2,500 one-to-one sessions and 550 youth club sessions.
