Full cycle path could link East and West Coast

Tuesday 31 December 2019

An off-road foot and cycle path linking Cobo to Town could be on the cards, as Environment & Infrastructure are looking to take the island's Transport Strategy forward.

The idea was raised in the new review of the Strategy, which was first agreed on by the States in 2015.

At its core, the Strategy aims to promote moving around the island without using a car - whether on foot, on a cycle or on public transport - a policy which drives many of E&I's road-related decisions.

The Committee said it was always optimal to separate cyclist and pedestrian infrastructure from the road, and while it said that was not always possible on Guernsey, there did appear to be an opportunity on the West Coast.

"The Committee is investigating the possibility of creating an off-road foot and cycle path that would ultimately link the west coast with the east coast, from Cobo to St Peter Port – an idea originally suggested and scoped by a local chartered architect and surveyors’ firm," the review said.

The project would inevitably look similar to that of the East Coast, but the Committee said having this separated infrastructure helps to encourage people to travel on foot or by bike, because they did not have to worry about mixing in with cars.

The review also had other suggestions which would aim to get people out from behind the wheel and onto a bus. E&I said it would investigate how realistic it was to install a bus and taxi lane running between Bulwer Avenue and the Red Lion (southbound).

This, it said, would improve "public amenity space and address a variety of road safety issues". It would also provide a distinct advantage to travelling by bus, because they would not have to contend with the same levels of traffic a normal driver would.
