Guernsey Electricity has selected the National Trust, Guernsey Biological Records Centre, La Societe Guernesiase Conservation Herd and the Clean Earth Trust as the recipients of their biannual donations.
The Power to the People fund was launched in 2020 and donates £6,000 twice a year to projects which are aligned with Guernsey Electricity’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and contribute towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
£2,890 has been donated to the National Trust. The money will be used to acquire an innovative, self-powered scythe to allow scrub to be cleared in a way which encourages biodiversity and increases accessibility to its land.
The Biological Records Centre has received £1,700 to record and enhance public awareness of eelgrass. The Centre will undertake a pilot study on an alternative boat moorings system with the aim of understanding and conserving eelgrass.
The Conservation Herd will use their donation of £500 to purchase food for the cattle who graze and trample around the island to protect and promote biodiversity.
The Clean Earth Trust has received £900 which it will put towards litter-picking kits for beach goers, which are provided from kiosks free of charge with the aim of making beach cleaning as accessible and as safe as possible.
This is Guernsey Electricity’s second round of Power to the People funding. Applications for the next round open later this year.
