Executive Principal announced for Guernsey Institute

Friday 16 August 2019

An 'experienced principal' from the UK has been employed by Education to run the new Guernsey Institute as its Executive Principal.

Jacki Hughes will work with ESC, the newly appointed Shadow Board of Governors and senior leaders for the next two years to lead and oversee the transformation needed to turn the College of Further Education, the Guernsey Training Agency and the Institute of HSC Studies into The Guernsey Institute.

Her appointment comes almost four months after ESC had wanted have an Executive Principal in post though, having said the person filling the newly created role would be announced at the end of April.

Now she has been recruited, ESC has been praising Mrs Hughes who was "worth the wait" they've said.

She has 'extensive and diverse experience' across many phases of education, with more than 30 years teaching in the post 16 sector, as well as senior leadership roles in Further and Higher Education. Alongside her teaching career to date, she has also spent more than 10 years as an Ofsted Inspector covering early years, apprenticeships, sixth form and FE colleges.

She most recently worked as Principal and CEO of Guildford College Group.

"I am looking forward to my new challenge in leading The Guernsey Institute, working closely with the existing leaders and their teams to create this new entity," Mrs Hughes said.

"I bring an absolute commitment to maintaining and further developing the highest standards of education and training, and the range of offering on the Island. This commitment extends to the development and support of all staff as The Guernsey Institute evolves.”

Deputy Richard Graham, Vice-President of ESC, added: “This is great news not only for the future of The Guernsey Institute and all those who will be either teaching or learning within its faculties, but also for the many Guernsey employers who look to The Guernsey Institute as the source of future employees with appropriate knowledge and skills. It has taken the Committee forEducation, Sport and Culture a little longer than we had hoped to find an Executive Principal of Mrs Hughes’ experience and qualities, but it has been well worth the wait.”

This appointment, according to ESC, represents another major step forward in the Committee's transformation plans for further and higher education. Her job will include helping move the three current bodies in to new, purpose built and higher quality facilities.

David Leafe, Member of the Shadow Board of Governors at The Guernsey Institute, said: “I am very pleased that it has been possible to recruit someone with the extensive relevant knowledge and experience that Mrs Hughes will bring to the role. I am sure she will provide excellent leadership and work effectively with the management teams and staff of the three organisations to ensure that the best aspects of each of them are preserved and enhanced as they come together to form The Guernsey Institute.

"Her past record demonstrates her commitment to post-16 education and the development of further opportunities for students, employees and employers who will benefit from the success of the Institute.
