“Exceptionally busy start to Christmas” at Guernsey Post

Monday 23 November 2020

For many of us Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier every year - however for the Post Office, it started in October.

Increases in parcels start to go up by 50% in October ahead of the big day. This, coupled with a general increase in postal activity due to the pandemic, has seen Guernsey Post become incredibly busy.

It follows a successful financial year that saw the company pay dividends to the States of Guernsey of more than £1.4 million.

“People are ordering early, which is absolutely the right thing to do," said Chief Executive Boley Smillie.

The busy season comes after years of the business adjusting to becoming a parcel business instead of a letter business.

“Parcel volumes have increased by 20% while letters have gone exactly the oppositie way,” said Mr Smillie.

“The business has been adjusting to becoming a parcel business that delivers a few letters as opposed to a letter business that delivers a few parcels.”

The company has been working hard to prepare and be ready for this shift and it has been reflected in its financial success over the past few years.
