Epic Herm swimming challenge underway

Saturday 04 August 2018

Five people will be completing a "trio of Herm swims" this weekend.

At 02:20 Sunday morning they are due to set off from Guernsey to Herm, before having a rest at the White House Hotel, before they are due to "attempt to circumnavigate Herm starting at 09:10" - that will be followed by a return swim from Herm to Guernsey in the afternoon.

The group of swimmers is made up of Jacqueline Hunt, Louise Smith, Lois Rawlings, Justine Riley and Adrian Sarchet.

Collectively they have been training for months - putting in hours of swimming in the cold sea during the winter and spring months before culminating in some tapered swims in the run up to this weekend.

They are due to start swimming in "total darkness" early Sunday morning, aiming to land in Herm at around 03:50.

They are then due to take some rest in the Grand Marquee at the White House before swimming around the island during the morning - aiming to "hug the coastline" as they went.

That second swim is estimated to take them up to two hours.

There won't be much rest time planned before the group are scheduled to swim back to Guernsey, with an estimated departure time from Herm of 15:20.

This part of the Epic swim was previously described as "the most challenging swim" taking them back across the Little Russel when they are likely to be fatigued and sleep deprived.

They're aiming to finish at Salarie Corner, with an estimated arrival of 17:10 before holding a celebration at La Piette Hotel from 18:00.

As well as the Epic Herm swim taking place this weekend, a second challenge is being held on Sunday 19 August, when 45 swimmers are due to do the Herm Swim - the 4.75km swim will take them across the Little Russel from St Sampson's Harbour to Hotel Beach in Herm.

For many this will be their first Herm crossing and longest swim to date.
