Diesel pushes through £1.50 mark

Tuesday 23 October 2018

Some Diesel in Guernsey is now costing more than £1.50 a litre.

The new price height comes after the latest garages added the additional 3p per litre duty to their prices, following the release of 2019's Budget by the States of Guernsey earlier this month.

Perelle Garage and Landes du Marche are now the two most expensive places to purchase Diesel in Guernsey. At both garages Diesel is £1.52 a litre and Unleaded is £1.45.

Meanwhile, the cheapest garage as of yesterday was Whiteway Motors, with Diesel at £1.36 per litre and Unleaded at £1.34. The most expensive unleaded petrol in the island is at Vale Garage, where it is £1.47 a litre.

These increases in the price of Diesel are £0.07 per litre, according to the Guernsey Fuel & Oil Watch Facebook page

Motorists now pay a total of 70.1p of excise duty on fuel per litre, following the most recent rise.

While the increase has to go to the States of Deliberation for approval, along with the rest of the Budget, it is highly unlikely any deputy will challenge the rise in fuel duty. That has not successfully happened in recent memory.

Meanwhile, in the UK, fuel duty was frozen for a ninth year in a row this year, leaving it at 57.95p per litre, while Jersey’s fuel duty is 45.47p, plus 5% GST. But Deputy Gavin St Pier has previously warned the island's purse is fuelled by the duty, and that people are able to make savings in other ways.

The latest petrol price increase follows inflation of 2.5%. More can be read about the announcement here.

Guernsey’s per litre fuel duty has surged since 2011 and is expected to continue to rise.
