Deputy to probe Beau Sejour review

Education, Sport & Culture faces parliamentary questions over its review into the island’s leisure centre next week, with further details sought over who will be involved and whether outsourcing the public service should be considered.

Deputy John Gollop has lodged three questions through Rule 11 of the States for response from the President of ESC, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, at the next political meeting on 13 December.

The questions come after the committee which oversees Beau Sejour announced it was undertaking a review into the operating model of the centre to ensure it is meeting the needs of the community and is financially viable.

Deputy Gollop wants to know if politicians and civil servants will be involved in this process, and is also seeking assurances that “diverse socioeconomic factors” are considered alongside finances such as “combatting loneliness, supporting equity and diversity, mental health and well being and supporting juvenile and elderly people's activity”.

He also raised the fact a previous review into the centre, led by the now non-existent Public Accounts Committee in 2015, concluded that its management shouldn’t be privately outsourced.

Deputy Gollop wants clarity over whether this will be considered as an option, “as well as enhancing Beau Sejour income”.

The current ESC previously acknowledged the role the centre has played for islanders since it opened in 1979.
