Crowdfunding to save Alderney's campsite

Sunday 26 January 2020

After vandals slashed tents, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage, a fundraising campaign has been launched to try and save the only campsite in Alderney.

The Saye Beach campsite is used by both island residents and visitors every year, with some staying in furnished tents which are available for hire, and others bringing their own with them.

Some of those tents, belonging to the campsite itself and some owned by regular guests, were vandalised on 16 January.

"Someone took a knife to the campsite and slashed up 8 trailer tents causing £10,000 worth of damage," said campsite manager, Zoe Sowden in an online fundraising post.

She added that the tents are only insured for fire and theft, so neither she nor the owners can claim against the bond.

"These tents house hundreds of holiday makers over the course of the summer who all add vital funds to the economy, which benefits the Island as a whole," said Ms Sowden.

"I am therefore asking the people of Alderney and the wider camping community to help replace these tents and get the campsite back up and running, ready for the forthcoming summer season."
