Warm spells spreading across the islands...

Saturday 27 January 2024

A six person sauna could soon be open at La Vallette, following hot on the heels of one in Alderney and two in Jersey.

Planning permission has been granted for a temporary one to be opened on a permanent basis opposite the bathing pools.

The sauna will be a mobile structure on a trailer, but the planning application made clear that the owners intend for it to be based at La Vallette permanently.

The application was made by Mr and Mrs Allen who have asked for the sauna to be housed on 'The Verge' which is on the landside side of La Vallette, beneath the cliff face.

Although one letter did ask for the planning officers to consider the risk of rockfalls in the area, there was no risk found so permission was given.

Such saunas have proven popular elsewhere, including in Alderney and Jersey.

Alderney's Adrift Sauna opened in the car park of the Braye Beach Hotel on Friday, It is expected to move locations around the island during the summer months.

States Member Alexander Snowdon was among those who paid a visit to the sauna on its opening day.

In Jersey, it was announced earlier this month that a second such facility is to be opened.

The first in Jersey is at St Catherine's Bay on the island's east coast, while the second will be on the St Helier seafront with a view over Elizabeth Castle.

The sauna due to open in Guernsey is expected to be of a similar design to the others already open across the islands.

It will be just under 3m high and just over 4m by 2m in size, and will sit on a gravel base.

There'll be seating inside for six people with a small changing room and a small office/store.

It's intended to be open all year round, between 07:00 and 21:00 Mondays to Saturdays and between 07:00 and 17:00 on Sundays.

Depending on bookings made the sauna will be able to accommodate up to 16 private 30-minute sessions per day or 50-minute communal sessions.

The Development and Planning Authority said that the sauna will be placed on "an elevated grass verge...to the west of, and accessed by stone steps from, La Vallette Road".

The bathing pools, with its cafe and changing rooms are to the east while there is public parking along the road.

The site is within a Conservation Area, Area of Biodiversity Importance, Harbour Action Area and Main Centre Outer Area in the Island Development Plan.

The conditions tied to the permission state that lights can only be on when the sauna is in use, and no "amplified music" will be allowed.

Signs and advertisements are also not allowed under the agreed planning permission.

The planning permission specifies that the trailer and sauna building must be removed within six months if the sauna ceases to operate.
