Christmas work aided jobseekers

Tuesday 30 January 2024

The number of jobseekers without work at the end of December was 287, down 15 from the previous month.

Compared to November, the total number of jobseekers with some work also decreased from 233 to 220 people.

The data has been released along with other statistics by the States as a 'snapshot' of the situation at the end of December 2023.

Data for Alderney shows there were four jobseekers there during the same month.

The Job Centre promoted 198 jobs in December - traditionally a busy time for retail, hospitality and fulfilment firms with many recruiting temporary staff as a result.

The number of new claims for employment and income-related benefits increased during the same period though, with 20 new claims made, compared with 16 in the previous month.

Of the total number of people claiming unemployment benefits, the majority were male. Data released by the States shows there were 149 men and 138 women not working at all.

The largest number of people not working at all, while claiming benefits were men in their 20s - with 30 complainants, compared to 27 women in the same age group.

The number of people working part-time while claiming 'top up' benefits were women with 50 claimants in their 40s, and 49 women in their 30s.

40 people were on a training scheme such as 'Work to Benefit', 'Kickstart', and placements within the third sector during December. The idea is this helps them find work reducing any reliance on the public purse.

Overall, unemployment levels remained fairly static during 2023.

Following the high unemployment levels caused by the covid pandemic, the number of people in work steadily increased during 2021 and 2022, meaning those claiming benefits as their sole income fell.

The numbers appear to have levelled out with minor fluctuations on a monthly basis.
