Charles' time has come and he'll "just get on with it"

Sunday 07 May 2023

There are very few people among the world’s billions of residents who can understand what the new King will have felt during his long tenure as the Prince of Wales.

As the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II - taking into account he was both the first born and the eldest son, Charles was destined to be King from the day of his birth.

Now that destiny has become reality.

Eight months after his mother's death at the age of 96, he has been Coronated at the age of 74.

By virtue of Queen Elizabeth II's long life, the new Monarch now occupies two unique positions in British history.

While his mother is the longest reigning Monarch in the country's memory, Charles III is the oldest Monarch to be crowned, and has also been the longest serving Prince of Wales.

Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title on him in 1969, meaning he held the role for 64 years and 44 days.

At an age when many people are slowing down in life, King Charles III will face a gruelling schedule this weekend and for the remainder of his life.

He knew this was coming though, and as others in similar positions to him have told Express, the notion of a hereditary title is often something which is accepted but not thought about in great detail.

The Sark Seigneur spoke to Express ahead of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II about the task ahead of the-then Prince of Wales.
