Chaos on the east coast?

Sunday 12 January 2025

People needing to use the east coast need to leave extra time for their journeys over the next couple of weeks.

From tomorrow (Monday 10 January) until the end of the month, remedial works will be carried out on a section of the coastal wall opposite Admiral Park.

The shared bicycle and pedestrian path will be closed, with a temporary footpath in the road, resulting in a single lane for traffic merging at temporary traffic lights between Carey Olsen and Ian Brown's Cycle Shop along Les Banques.

Cyclists will have to dismount to use the temporary footpath or remain in the road.

Traffic and Highways says the temporary traffic lights will be manually operated during the day, including at peak times, and if the work doesn't continue over the weekends then they will be removed.

The States of Guernsey also said these additional measures, along with the post-Christmas timing, were planned to ease the burden on traffic flow with congestion expected to increase.

Traffic and Highways said that staff aim to have finished the work by the end of the month (28 January), but that could be dependent on the winter tides, and as the work progresses there may have to be changes to the traffic management system put in place.

Commuters in to town, and others needing to use Les Banques are advised to allow extra time to mitigate for the potential traffic flow issues.
