Chainhouse crossroads to get its filter-in-turn

Wednesday 25 August 2021

A filter-in-turn will be created at a St Andrew's junction described by constables as an "accident black spot".

The filter will be installed on Tuesday 31 August in a bid to improve safety at the junction between St Andrew's Road, Candie Road and La Vassalerie, also known as the Chainhouse crossroads.

"The constables have become increasingly concerned by reports of accidents, near misses and speeding at this junction," said Martin Thwaite from St Andrew's Douzaine, which has backed the plans.

"Both parishioners and islanders will be aware it has been an accident black spot for many years, and now increasing traffic in the area has made the installation of a filter necessary."

Traffic & Highway Services said a filter-in-turn is the "next step in efforts to improve safety at the junction" after previous changes to warning signs and road markings failed to make the difference.

There were four recorded road traffic collisions at the junction in 2020.

"Through the installation of this filter, which relies on all drivers approaching the junction to do so slowly and with care, it is anticipated that safety at this junction will be improved," said a spokesperson for THS.

"Additional temporary signage warning of the new junction layout, along with the provision of bollards and LED road studs will aid drivers in using the filter."

The trial will take place for 12-months and reviewed at that point.
