Carpetright employees likely to get nothing

Wednesday 24 July 2024

Carpetright's employees in Guernsey are unlikely to receive any redundancy pay after losing their jobs this week.

The retailer went into administration on Monday, with more than 1,000 job losses across the UK and Channel Islands.

The Tapi Group - another carpet and flooring company - bought the business but only intends to keep 56 of Carpetright's sites open, with head office staff kept on for now to carry out the winding up processes.

Carpetright had owned 273 stores and employed 1,898 people. The administrators won't confirm how many of those people were employed in Guernsey but it is believed to have been fewer than 10.

A spokesperson for PwC said that employees in the UK will be supported by "the Redundancy Payments Service (RPS) to ensure that those affected receive their statutory entitlements as soon as possible". They also said that Tapi has pledged to collaborate with other retailers "to ensure their job applications receive priority and funding workshops aimed at improving employability skills".

The Guernsey situation was summed up separately, however.

The PwC spokesperson told Express that: "Those affected by redundancy will be working with the relevant authorities to ensure people are supported and paid statutory payments that may be due to them as a result of the administration.

"We are also working with Tapi and other organisations who can help with future employment."

In Guernsey, the current statutory requirement for redundancy pay is zero.

The States' Employment Relation Service's Code of Practice confirms: "there are no statutory provisions in the Bailiwick that require employers to pay employees a redundancy payment or to notify employees that redundancies may occur".

For any customers with outstanding orders made through the local Carpetright store, the administrators have confirmed they won't be fulfilled.

"...it is recommended that affected customers contact their payment card provider about the possibility of obtaining a refund," PwC advised yesterday.

Customers who paid by credit card were encouraged to contact their card provider to initiate a section 75 refund.

Those who have paid by finance were advised to contact the provider directly.

Those who paid by cash, cheque or debit card were advised to contact Carpetright directly after Friday.
