The big 'Geekend' returns today

Saturday 01 September 2018

More participants than ever before are preparing to take part in this year’s Big Geekend where nerds are welcome at a two-day celebration of offbeat hobbies, pastimes and collections.

The popular annual event is now in its fifth year and takes place at Guernsey Museum at Candie today and tomorrow, Sunday 2 September, between 10:00 and 16:00.

As in previous years, the Museum galleries will be populated with people who have profound interests and quirky collections. These include individual passions ranging from knitting to Cosplay and sci-fi to collecting artwork made from butterfly wings.

The Guernsey Wargames Club will be staging battles on both days and the Guernsey Amateur Radio Society will be in residence all weekend. In the Frossard Theatre, there is a full programme of films and activities entitled ‘Geekend TV’, which is hosted by Clameur du Cinéma. There will also be a talk for families about the popular game ‘Fortnite’ on Sunday at 10:00.

In the Discovery Room visitors will have the chance to take part in special activities surrounding the ‘dinosaurs’ timewarp for the weekend. The activities continue outside in Candie Gardens, with living history from the Guernsey Military History Company, model trains, sci-fi, comics, Dr Who, line dancing and some Guernsey cows from La Société ConservaGon Herd. Other interests on display include dowsing and a Quirky Tree Tour.

Jo Dowding, Access & Learning Manager said, "museums have always been havens for geeks and we love to celebrate this. It’s so interesting to hold an event which doesn’t stick to one time period. The Big Geekend really embodies the phrase ‘variety is the spice of life’."

Normal admission applies to all the activties inside the Museum, so Discovery Pass holders go free. If you don’t have a Discovery Pass, the admission is Adults £6.50, Children £2 and children under 7 are free.

Timetables will be available to download from the Guernsey Museum website or Facebook page museums.gov.gg. Or you can access the full timetable of events HERE.
