Herstory not history

Saturday 13 April 2024

A two-day museum event this weekend will celebrate 'Herstory' - a look at our history through the lives of the women who helped shape it.

The ‘Herstory Fest’ is being staged at Guernsey Museum at Candie, with visitors invited to "discover various aspects of local women’s history from the lives of nurses in WWI with The Guernsey Military History Company to the stories of notable Guernsey women through live performances with the Guernsey History in Action Company".

Miffy Lane, Access and Learning Manager, said it is important to note the difference between 'herstory' and 'history'.

“Although we have been doing the History Fest for many years now, this is the first time it’s being hosted at Guernsey Museum at Candie, and we are particularly excited to be focusing on our local women’s history," she said.

"With the ‘Notable Women of Guernsey’ foyer display and Guernsey Arts presenting Linda Martorella’s exhibition ‘Entanglement’ Candie is the perfect back drop for such an exploration and celebration of local women’s lives, achievements, experiences, minds, spirit and form.”

As part of Herstory Fest movies featuring local women will be showing in the Frossard Theatre.

Tickets for a selection of free tours on women’s history hosted by Guernsey Arts and Guernsey Museums will also be available via Eventbrite, with more details on the museum website and social media pages.

The Museum’s Time Warp will be temporarily closed to allow the Discovery Room to be used to host drop-in workshops with artist Olympia McEwan. There will also be lots of special activities available; from handling objects from the museum collection to tailor made trails and activities to enjoy.

The Museum will be open between 10:00 and 17:00 for the Herstory Fest with entry free for Discovery Pass holders.

Candie Gardens’ gates will be locked in the evenings this weekend, because of the Herstory Fest taking place at the Museum.

The gates will be locked at 19:00 until 07:30 tomorrow to ensure the event's security.

Signage will be hung on all gates to warn the public of the gate closures throughout the weekend.

As well as Herstory, the foyer display in the museum itself is 'Notable Women of Guernsey' which highlights the lives and achievements of more than 30 women.

Coming to the museum next, is the 'Amazing Creatures: Treasures' display from the island's Natural History Collection. That will open on 26 April, and will run until 15 September.

It is considered to be a major exhibition for the Museum, with "many incredible specimens from around the world" promised to feature in the exhibition.
