Alderney reacts to covid-19 crisis

Wednesday 25 March 2020

Every Alderney resident and business will be sent an eight page leaflet, put together by the island's States, with information on how they are reacting to the corona virus crisis.

The island, along with the rest of the Bailiwick, is now in lockdown.

Residents are only allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons, such as getting food or medicines.

The leaflet explains the current plans for testing, as well as details on self isolation and information about the recently formed Alderney Spirit programme.

It sets out further advice for those over 65 and explains what will happen in regards to medicals, social security and support from the States of Guernsey in cases of hardship.

"Working together, we can all demonstrate the Alderney spirit that connects us with all those brave souls who returned in 1945 to face their own life-changing challenge," said States of Alderney President, William Tate. "We will get through this. It's a case of pulling together by staying apart."

Any Alderney residents who are self isolating - either because they travelled recently or they have respiratory symptoms - are asked to contact one of the covid-19 helplines, so the Island Medical Centre can offer support and advice if necessary.

The newsletter will be sent to every home in the island and an online PDF version will be made available here.

Further information and advice on the virus is available here.

Advice for Alderney residents following the lockdown announcement can be found here.

A group has been set up to focus all of the community initiatives to help each other in one place.

The Alderney Spirit page on Facebook includes information on what businesses remain open, which food outlets are doing deliveries and who is available to help another resident in need at this time.

It also includes information from the island's doctor and other authorities which members of the community are sharing to keep each other informed and connected.
