Addison's adds hundreds to Jersey Appeal funds

Sunday 18 December 2022

A fundraiser organised by a Guernsey sandwich shop for the Jersey Appeal, which is raising money to support those affected by the island's two recent tragedies, has raised £355.

Addison's in Trinity Square held the donation day on Friday with support from other local businesses and individuals.

The owner, Emma Rhodes said that Victoria Road Stores had donated milk and biscuits while Aindre Reece Sheerin produced the poster used to promote the fundraiser.

Ms Rhodes had pledged to make a donation to the Jersey Appeal for every coffee sold on Friday.

The Jersey Appeal was launched by the island's Bailiff after two tragedies hit the community in just two days.

Three fishermen were lost at sea off St Ouen's on Thursday 8 December after their trawler collided with a freight ship. On Saturday 10 December a block of flats in St Helier exploded, killing nine people and displacing hundreds.

Donations to the Jersey Appeal can be made until December 23 when all funds will be distributed among those affected by the two tragedies.

Ms Rhodes said she was pleased that Addison's customers had contributed to that fund.

"We are overwhelmed at the support from our customers," she said.

"One of the things I love about living in Guernsey, even though there is a friendly rivalry between the two islands, when one island is in trouble all the other islands come together and help."

She confirmed that Friday was busy for herself and her colleague Reece Simmons with orders coming in including one from Langham Hall Guernsey where 25 coffees were ordered for staff as a company donation to the Jersey Appeal.

A separate fund which was launched by the daughter of the skipper of L'ecume II which collided with the Commodore Goodwill and sank last week has now raised £100,000 for the families of his two Filipino crewmen.

Michael Michieli, Larry Simyuun, and Jervis Ramirez Baligat, had worked together for up to nine months at the time with the two younger men sending their earnings home to their families.

Mr Michieli's daughter, Rebecca said Mr Baligat and Mr Simyunn would send home "a good proportion of the money they made to their families back home in the Philippines."

She set up a fundraising page to support their families, with a target of £3,000 which had raised £99,225 by Friday night.
