£50k going to Gaza

Thursday 14 December 2023

Guernsey's Overseas Aid and Development Commission is donating £50,000 to Christian Aid to support the charity's work in Gaza.

The Commission announced that it has agreed to make "an immediate Disaster and Emergency Relief Award...to provide life-saving assistance".

The Commission said that it is "gravely concerned by the situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories and is very sad to hear of the ongoing loss of life and thousands of injuries caused by the conflict".

Having previously said that it would only make a donation if the aid could be safely delivered, the decision was made this week to make the donation for humanitarian reasons.

All of the supplies bought using the £50,000 will be purchased within Gaza helping to ensure its safe delivery.

£35,000 is to be spent on 6,000 kilos of dry milk powder with the rest helping to provide other basic needs such as water, food, nappies and winter clothes for babies and the elderly.

To ensure all of the provisions are safe for human consumption there has been due diligence on all supplies with the dry milk powder being sourced from a food manufacturing company based in Gaza.

Christian Aid is doing that screening and is working with "long-standing and trusted partners in Gaza to ensure there is no profiteering or malicious actors involved".

The charity is also directing its help to people in Gaza currently living in shelters, or with host families, especially those deemed the most vulnerable.

Deputy Chris Blin, the President of the OA&DC, said it is not making any comment on the situation in Gaza but wants to help with the humanitarian crisis.

“The Commission does not take a political position on such matters, but what it does take is a humanitarian one," he said.

"There is currently great hardship for Gaza’s population, including children and the elderly, and the Commission is pleased to make a contribution to help ease this human suffering.”
